Los Angeles Rams: 30 greatest players in franchise history
By Dan Parzych
Two years ago, the Rams along with a few other teams were celebrating Kevin Greene finally earning a spot in Canton. He had been finally elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame after a stellar career in the NFL, including eight amazing seasons with the Rams.
From 1985-92, Greene had established a reputation for himself as one of the top defensive players in the NFL. When looking at how much of a pass-rushing freak he was at times, it’s easy to see why.
The former Auburn standout was another one of those steals for Los Angeles. The Rams managed to land the linebacker in the fifth round of the 1985 NFL Draft, although he didn’t start a single game for the first three seasons.
Once Greene worked his way into a reliable starter in 1988, the sacks started to pile up, as he would go on to record 16.5 in both of the next two seasons. This illustrates just how much of leap he was able to make as an effective defender.
Greene recorded at least 10 sacks in four of his final five seasons in Los Angeles before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1993 NFL free agency. This is just one of many reasons why he would eventually earn his rightful place in Canton.
After all of those years ending up as a finalist beginning in 2007, it was an amazing feeling to see Greene finally earn that overdue selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016. He’s one of the five best sack artists of all-time. What took so long?
