Whether they want to admit it or not, there were some Rams fans that were ready to give up on Todd Gurley after a difficult sophomore campaign in 2016. That fall, he failed to record a single 100-yard rushing game, although it wasn’t entirely his fault.
Between a poor offensive line, a weak receiving corps and the team averaging just 14 points per game, it was unfair to place this blame on Gurley. Los Angeles didn’t exactly do the best job of building a solid offense around him. It’s why former head coach Jeff Fisher had to go. The offense was archaic.
One year later, Gurley would go on to have the best year of his young career in 2017. He finished with 2,093 yards from the line of scrimmage to go along with 19 touchdowns. Gurley came in second in the MVP voting to Tom Brady of the New England Patriots.
Now, the pressure is on Gurley to continue this kind of success since the Rams are now considered one of the early favorites to make a run at the Super Bowl in 2018. Given Sean McVay’s reputation of being an offensive guru, there really isn’t a reason for concern.
Sure, the argument can be made that labeling Gurley one of the greatest Rams of all-time is a bold statement since he just wrapped up his third NFL season. But do keep in mind that he took home NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors as well in 2015.
In other words, Gurley is only going to make a stronger case for himself for being on a list like this, and could climb even higher over the next couple of years.
