Los Angeles Rams: 30 greatest players in franchise history
By Dan Parzych
Earlier on this list, it was discussed how members of special teams don’t always receive the kind of respect they deserve. While punter Johnny Hekker deserves consideration for being one of the top members in team history, kicker Jeff Wilkins is up there as well.
After spending the first three years of his career as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers, Wilkins came to the Rams in 1997, who were playing in St. Louis at the time.
From there, Wilkins would go on to be the Rams kicker for the next 11 seasons. He would even help the team win Super Bowl XXXIV by defeating the Tennessee Titans in a game that came down to merely one yard.
The fact that Wilkins connected on 64 extra points that season is just another example of how much of a high-powered offense the Rams had to work with. More details on some of those outstanding Rams offensive players will come later.
As for Wilkins, he certainly had plenty of memorable moments throughout his kicking career in St. Louis. Whether it was the 307 career field goals made or some of the impressive single-game performances, such as the six converted field goals in 2006 during a game against the Denver Broncos, St. Louis always had faith in its kicker’s right foot.
Nobody needs to explain to NFL teams just how difficult it can be sometimes to find a reliable kicker. Seeing Wilkins be reliable as he was throughout his 11 years with the team shows how fortunate the Rams were to have him on their side.
