As Aaron Donald continues to wait for a new contract from the Los Angeles Rams, Ndamukong Suh decided to chime in on the matter.
With the Los Angeles Rams beginning a new week of training camp to prepare for the 2018 season, one of the biggest topics of discussion is still when the team will finally reach an agreement with Aaron Donald over a new contract.
For the second summer in a row, Donald has been absent from training camp, as the defensive superstar continues to fight for a hefty new contract. And while the Rams were able to get away with holding off last summer since Donald still had two years remaining on his deal at the time, the circumstances are much different this time around.
Now that Donald is entering the final year of his contract, the last thing Los Angeles should want to do is have this drag out to a point where it puts the team at risk to losing him down the road in free agency. Sure, the Rams may end up using the strategy of going with the franchise tag when it comes, but at the end of the day, a move like this is only going to cause more problems with Donald.
Not to mention, Los Angeles fans will be crushed if Donald’s holdout extends into the regular season, and they don’t get to see the superstar team up with Ndamukong Suh on the defensive line.
The Rams pulled off quite the surprise in the offseason when they convinced Suh to come on board for a one-year, $14 million deal, but also many belied this move was done as an insurance policy in case they experienced more issues with Donald’s contract.
As great of an addition as Suh is to the defense, even he knows that Donald deserves to be making more money when looking at the impact he’s already made as one of the top defenders in the league.
So when fans hear Suh speak out about how Donald is worthy of a heftier deal, it’s great to see one of the newest members of the Rams realize the importance of getting something done.
Donald has proven to be quite the special talent in such a short period of time. And even though his 11 sacks along with 5.5 forced fumbles in 14 games from 2017 don’t stand out as much as other defensive players, keep in mind these numbers were also a result of receiving extra attention from opponents.
The situation with Donald shouldn’t be compared to other recent contracts that players like Brandin Cooks and Todd Gurley received since his next deal is most likely going to be a lot more complicated as a result of guaranteed money involved.
Hopefully, the Rams will take Suh’s comments into consideration to push harder for a deal to get done with Donald sooner rather than later. Otherwise, it’s going to be a long month of August in Los Angeles, as the frustration with Donald’s absence continues to build up.
