If we’ve learned anything in preseason football with McVay leading the Rams, it’s that he’s ultra-conservative. Against the Raiders on Saturday, look for that trend to hold, but only for this week.

While the Rams playing the Raiders in Los Angeles has only nostalgia working for it, its next week against the Texans where we’ll probably see something more reminiscent of what fans will see on the field come the regular season.

However this week against Oakland, not so much.

It will be a curious watch to see how close to the vest McVay rides this preseason. It’s also curious how his thought process will or will not affect the regular season.

Last season, Los Angeles got out of the gate fast by beating a bad Indianapolis Colts team, losing to a mediocre Washington Redskins, then hanging in on the road against the San Francisco 49ers, before a groundbreaking win at the Dallas Cowboys.

It’s worth noting that no preseason game last year proved as a launching pad to an unexpected 11-5 campaign that saw the Rams make the playoffs.

Saturday against the Raiders won’t prove any differently.

Look for the Rams to get Mannion and third string quarterback Brandon Allen some significant time to evaluate a growing question in Los Angeles.

Beyond that, don’t look for much else.
