3. Justin Davis

Around this time last year, Justin Davis was considered one of the best surprises of the Rams after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent a few months before thanks to a strong preseason by the running back. Even heading into this year’s training camp, Davis seemed like a player that was ready to take on a larger role on offense with the Rams as one of the backups, although he’s been at a disadvantage the last few weeks after suffering a hamstring injury.

During the first preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens, Davis showed flashes of greatness from a year ago in the preseason after finishing with 41 rushing yards on just seven carries, making an early case for another roster spot. But when seeing how effective John Kelly has been this preseason by leading the team in rushing yards each game, Davis is all of a sudden part of an interesting battle at the running back position.

Seeing Kelly deep on the depth chart to begin training camp to see him possibly earn the No. 2 spot behind Todd Gurley shows how much of a disadvantage Davis could be at when it comes to which running back McVay decides to keep around. Obviously, the situation could have been much different with Davis playing instead of dealing with a hamstring injury, but at least not all hope is lost for the young running back since McVay knows what he’s capable of when healthy.
