When the Los Angeles Rams went out and got wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the Patriots, fans swooned.
That will wear off quickly before getting to October.
The best receiver in 2018 hands down will be Robert Woods, and Goff will make that very clear early on this season.
Quarterbacks like and feel most comfortable with what they know. Coming into this season, especially if Los Angeles is struggling a bit, it’ll be Woods who gets the targets as Goff gains some confidence in Cooks.
Factor this also, in that the Rams have a lot of offensive weapons. Cooks may ultimately prove to be an occasional big target, whereas Gurley and Cooper Kupp will be more comfortable and familiar.
That’s not to say Goff and Cooks don’t ultimately get it together later in the season. But that may be something fans see later in 2018. Early on expect to see Gurley be featured prominently as a runner and pass catcher, and Woods and Kupp preferred targets, especially in tight games, which the Rams will have.
After this exhibition season, I’m convinced more than ever that McVay is a creature of habit. He likes what he likes, and his comfort level isn’t much of a secret.
That will rub off on Goff.
If LA finds itself struggling in September, and I believe they will, what is familiar will be seen on the field.
Meaning Cooks is a player to watch for later in 2018.
