While Patrick Mahomes II seemed to be the top candidate standing in Todd Gurley’s way for the MVP award, it looks like the Los Angeles Rams star may have to worry about Drew Brees as well.

Days after the Los Angeles Rams suffered their first loss of 2018 on the road to the New Orleans Saints, the main focus for Todd Gurley and the rest of his teammates will be on this weekend’s battle against a familiar face in the Seattle Seahawks.

Even though the Rams finished on the winning end during the first meeting between these two teams, Sean McVay knows this game is far from a guarantee since Los Angeles only beat Seattle by two points in that one.

Once again, the Rams will most likely be heavily relying on Gurley to produce on offense, as the running back looks to increase his impressive streak of finding the end zone 12 games in a row dating back to last season.

With 16 total touchdowns to go along with 1,230 yards from scrimmage through nine games, all signs point to Gurley being in the conversation for the MVP award when the time comes down the road after finishing second last season to Tom Brady.

For most of the season, Patrick Mahomes II seemed to be Gurley’s biggest competition for the honors, and rightfully so when looking at what he’s accomplished as the new starter at quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs.

However, as much as Gurley and Rams fans may view Mahomes as the biggest competition to win MVP, last weekend made it clear the running back could see some competition as well from Drew Brees.

Seeing how New Orleans has moved into the top spot at the moment in the NFC playoff picture, it’s amazing to see what Brees has been able to accomplish for a quarterback his age with no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Not only did Brees torch the defense of Los Angeles this past weekend by tossing four touchdown passes, but the future Hall of Fame has 18 on the season to go along with just one interception. Most importantly, as mentioned before, the Saints are sitting pretty on top of the NFC at the moment with a 7-1 record, and seem motivated more than ever to keep the Rams from that top seed in the conference.

Brees may not be up there numbers wise with Mahomes at the moment, but when looking at how effective he’s been so far in 2018 along with the extra advantage he arguably has experience wise, things could quickly change in a matter of a few games.

For weeks, the main topic of discussion for the MVP race seemed to be a battle between Mahomes and Gurley, but with Brees high level of impact since his team’s only loss back in Week 1, he certainly deserves to be part of the conversation as well.
