Reports indicate that Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor is the favorite to land the head coaching job with the Cincinnati Bengals.
While the Los Angeles Rams continue to prepare for Saturday’s playoff meeting with the Dallas Cowboys, it looks like one member of the coaching staff is making headlines as well over the possibility of becoming the next head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals.
After joining Sean McVay‘s staff in 2017 as an assistant wide receivers coach, Zac Taylor was promoted to quarterbacks coach prior to the 2018 season as a result of Matt LaFleur leaving the team to become offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans.
Coincidentally, LaFleur recently accepted the job to be the new head coach of the Green Bay Packers, but the focus in regards to the Rams for now is on Taylor, and how he may be on the move once the season comes to an end.
When looking at the work Taylor has done over the last two seasons, especially this year with the development of Jared Goff, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to hear a team like the Cincinnati Bengals expressing interest in possibly making him their next head coach.
In fact, when looking at how long it took the Bengals to realize that Marvin Lewis was far from the answer at head coach, someone like Taylor could be just what this team needs to help guys like Andy Dalton and A.J. Green reach a new level.
Bengals would like to hire Rams’ QB coach Zac Taylor after Los Angeles’ season ends, league sources tell @mortreport and me. It looks like it is Taylor’s job to lose. He is the preferred choice.

Rams QB coach and Bengals’ favorite Zac Taylor was the University of Cincinnati offensive coordinator in 2016, and has strong feelings about the city. It is a place he really wants to be and is expected to now have that chance.

Between hearing from Adam Schefter that the job is his to lose along with the ties to the city of Cincinnati in general, this seems like it would be a dream scenario for someone like Taylor. And as crushing as this would be for the Rams to lose a second big coordinator in two seasons, this is sadly what happens with good teams in the NFL, meaning Los Angeles should just be thrilled over the fact they have a solid team.
Nothing is set in stone at the moment when it comes to Taylor since nothing news wise seems like it will break until the Rams’ season officially comes to an end. But at least if this does become official, Los Angeles will be just fine when it comes to finding a replacement.
McVay is one of the top head coaches in the NFL for a reason when seeing how quickly he’s made the Rams legitimate contenders again in such a short period of time, so finding a potential replacement for Taylor if needed shouldn’t be a problem.
Of course, before worrying about all of this, all McVay is worried about is Saturday night’s game against the Cowboys to make sure the team avoids what happened last year when they lost right away to the Atlanta Falcons.
If all goes well, Los Angeles will earn the win over Dallas to advance to the NFC Championship, meaning this whole scenario involving Taylor can get pushed back a little bit longer before the Rams have to deal with it.
