The Los Angeles Rams may be the better team at 13-3, but that won’t stop the fanboys in the media who love them some Dallas Cowboys to win Saturday night.
Well, that didn’t take long. As usual, sports media is again slobbering all over themselves and picking the Dallas Cowboys over the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday night. While it shouldn’t be a surprise at just how much they adore Big-D, it is an indication that a lot of NFL and media analysts feel that LA may have peaked a bit too soon.
It’s a fair point.
The Rams in December weren’t quite the same as they were the previous three months of the season. Los Angeles was a good 5-3 in November and December while the Cowboys were slightly better at 7-2. Not miles better, but a worthy note.
Will that translate to anything tangible on Saturday night?
The one thing even most fans should concede is that coming out of the bye week, the Rams looked different. Obviously injuries to Todd Gurley and especially Cooper Kupp were significant factors, but LA still finished with a 13-3 record and two consecutive wins to close out the season.
As for why the media is nearly all in on Dallas? Well, that shouldn’t be “breaking news.”
The Cowboys are great for clicks and talking points. They are a genuine name brand, and it seems almost without fail that they have more dyed in the cloth fanboys from Bristol to Los Angeles than any other team in the NFL, with the possible exception of Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
Just yesterday Colin Cowherd said the better story come Monday morning is a Cowboys win while his guest picked LA to lose. Even if a pundit isn’t necessarily picking Dallas, they are leaning in the direction that the Rams played their better to best football in October and November.
Even with the Rams at 13-3, the best perceived head coach in Sean McVay, and being in a bigger media market like Los Angeles with a young up and coming team dominating the NFC West, the Cowboys are still the preferred flavor in the 2018 NFL playoffs.
At 10-6, Dallas is good.
At 13-3, the Rams look to be better.
Bottom line, throw the records out as the talking heads are also fans, and an overwhelming number of them like the Cowboys.
Hey brand recognition sells, even if the overall quality of the product doesn’t measure up.
