3. Continue stopping the run
During the regular season, one of the biggest weaknesses of the Rams’ defense turned out to be stopping the run, which was surprising since the defense was stacked with talent led by Aaron Donald and Ndamukong Suh.
However, Wade Phillips deserves plenty of credit for making the necessary adjustments for the playoffs after seeing the difference Los Angeles has been able to make on the defensive side of the football when it comes to stopping the run.
It was one thing to hold a dominant running back like Ezekiel Elliott to only 47 rushing yards in the Divisional Round, but to watch the Rams limit Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara to combining for 46 rushing yards in the NFC Championship shows how different the unit has been.
Now, it’s up to Los Angeles to make the same impact when facing New England since the offense will be loaded with plenty of dangerous running backs as well, whether it happens to be rookie Sony Michel or the effective pass-catcher in James White.
Even Rex Burkhead has found a way to make an impact as of late for the Patriots to make their ground game even more of a threat heading into the Super Bowl. No matter what it takes, the Rams need to make sure they continue to play strong on defense when it comes to stopping the run, or it’s going to be the frustrations from the regular season all over again.
