One has to imagine that as great as this weekend is for fans, former Los Angeles Rams head coach must feel like a guy wondering “what if?”

Has anyone checked on Jeff Fisher this week? Last time I heard, the former head coach of the Los Angeles Rams was feeling nostalgic about watching the team buses drive away ahead of a road game with the Seattle Seahawks.

As a witness to the disaster that was the 2016 season where they finished 4-12, and rookie quarterback Jared Goff 0-7, mustering a lot of sympathy for a guy quick to take credit for some or only a little of the Rams success under head coach Sean McVay has been tough to do.

That said, Fisher seems content, albeit begrudgingly, that his days on the sideline as CEO of a National Football League team are squarely in the rear view mirror.

I actually liked him. During the Rams turn on HBO’s Hard Knocks, the first back in Los Angeles after too many years in St. Louis, I found myself rooting for him to get things turned around in the place where he played his college football, the L.A. Coliseum. After finding a 3-1 record at the first quarter pole of that ill-fated season, it looked like he’d finally hit pay dirt.

Fisher looked to finally hit the wall with only one additional win in Week 10 against the New York Jets before eventually cratering, first against the New England Patriots 26-10 on the road, and then to the Atlanta Falcons 42-14 in the Coliseum.

Perhaps some familiar salt in the wound if he’s keeping score.

It would be interesting to watch Super Bowl LIII with Fish on Sunday. The stories he’d tell, the lament in his voice, the wonder why it couldn’t be him getting his last team to a game he’s now relegated to watching on TV.
