The NFL has yet to decide on whether the roof at Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be open or closed for the Super Bowl.

As with all things Super Bowl, any news is news with the latest tidbit from the National Football League and Commissioner Roger Goodell being whether the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots will play under an open or a closed roof.

Like I said, any news is news during Super Bowl Week.

Temperatures in Atlanta for Super Sunday are expected to be in the low 60’s but with a little rain early in the day and a passing shower in the evening, meaning odds are super long that the Commissioner opts for an open roof at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Isn’t this why dome stadiums are typically preferred for games of this magnitude?

As new stadiums come on line, especially for an NFL city, the ability to open and close a roof on demand seems a near certainty at design. The new digs for the Rams, L.A. Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood Park, will have a canopy over the stadium bowl that is transparent. The ETFE roof will not only cover the the entire playing field, but an adjacent plaza and 6,000 seat theater for events.

As for Sunday, weather for the Super Bowl is hardly ever a factor, though a few in recent memory have had some rain during the game.

In 2018, the Los Angeles Rams have had few if any issues with weather, with the exception being snow and cold in Colorado for a game against the Denver Broncos, and chilly temperatures when Los Angeles went on the road to play the Chicago Bears. Outside of that, the Rams have avoided any significant issues with the elements.

Bottom line, unless Atlanta has picture-perfect weather and clear skies, count on the roof being closed for Super Bowl LIII.
