Robert Woods and the Los Angeles Rams will take part in Super Bowl 53 on Sunday against the New England Patriots.
Nearly two years ago, the Los Angeles Rams made the decision in free agency to sign Robert Woods to a five-year deal to provide another weapon for Jared Goff to work with in the passing game.
Back then, the Rams were viewed as one of the league’s biggest laughing stocks after coming off a 2016 season in which the team averaged just 14 points per game, with one of the reasons being their receiving corps was one of the weakest in the league.
At the time, it was easy to understand the decision by Los Angeles to go after Woods after looking at the potential he brought to the table, but also there were some fans who weren’t 100 percent sold on the idea.
One of the main factors that played into some fans being upset over the move was the idea how the Rams were in desperate need of a reliable No. 1 wide receiver for Goff to work with, and Woods just didn’t seem like the answer.
During the four years spent as a member of the Buffalo Bills, the best production Woods ever put together was the 65 catches for 699 yards with five touchdowns during the 2014 season, making it seem like he would be better off as a No. 2 receiver at best.
Turns out, the Rams knew exactly what they were doing with their decision to sign Woods after watching how valuable he’s been over the last two years to help give Los Angeles one of the most dangerous offenses in the league.
In fact, Woods managed to take advantage of playing alongside other great receivers like Brandin Cooks by putting together a career year with the Rams after hauling in 86 catches for 1,219 yards to go along with six touchdowns.
All of a sudden, no one is questioning the decision made by the organization from almost two years ago to bring Woods on board since chances are, Los Angeles wouldn’t be on the verge of winning Super Bowl 53 without him.
Right away, Woods seemed to develop the necessary chemistry with Goff to help the offense take a major step in the right direction, and the Rams would love nothing more than to see the wideout come up big once again when it matters the most in the Super Bowl.
The Patriots certainly won’t make it easy for Woods, but just like all season, he could benefit from New England’s defense focusing most of their attention on the whereabouts of Cooks, meaning he could be in for a big game on Sunday night.
