PFF acknowledges how strong Los Angeles Rams are at wide receiver
By Dan Parzych
PFF recently listed the trio of wide receivers for the Los Angeles Rams in their top five grades from the position in the NFC West.
A few years ago, the receiving corps of the Los Angeles Rams was viewed as one of the biggest jokes across the NFL since no offense was ever going to be productive with Tavon Austin and Kenny Britt leading the way.
Luckily, Sean McVay wasted little time helping turn things around by convincing Robert Woods to come on board in 2017 during free agency before drafting Cooper Kupp in the third round of the NFL Draft not too long after.
While the original plan consisted of Sammy Watkins hopefully being the top option in the passing game after acquiring the speedster from the Buffalo Bills before the start of the 2017 season, the former Clemson star turned out to be a one-hit wonder for Los Angeles.
However, after Watkins would end up leaving last year in free agency for the Kansas City Chiefs, the Rams would eventually upgrade for their No. 1 wideout option by agreeing to trade for Brandin Cooks from the New England Patriots.
All of a sudden, the previous trio of effective receivers received a major upgrade heading into the 2018 season, and certainly lived up to the hype after looking at the numbers they were able to put up.
Losing Cooper Kupp when they did was certainly a crushing blow for Los Angeles at the time since the former Eastern Washington star benefitted from playing alongside Cooks and Woods, but at least Josh Reynolds was able to step up in his absence.
Assuming that everything continues to go well with Kupp during his recovery process, all signs point to Los Angeles having one of the best trios at receiver once again for the 2019 season. And when taking a closer look at the grades the trio received from the folks at PFF for their grades in the NFC West at the position, it backs the claim up even more.
Right away, the fact that Woods sits on top of this list says a lot about how confident the Rams were back in 2017 since some fans were upset over the signing at the time due to the fact that his previous career high was only 699 receiving yards.
Flash forward to 2019, Woods is considered one of the league’s most dangerous receivers who seems like he’s only going to continue getting better along with the rest of his teammates, as they continue to develop the necessary chemistry with Jared Goff.
On another note, isn’t it crazy to see how the Rams and Seattle Seahawks were the only two teams with receivers on this list of grades? Depending on how the offseason goes for the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers, this could very well change for next year’s grades, but also most likely won’t prevent the Rams from still earning some sort of honors for the list.
