Los Angeles Rams should consider potential reunion with Kayvon Webster
By Dan Parzych
Despite how things played out last offseason, the Los Angeles Rams should look into the possibility of a second stint with Kayvon Webster on defense.
Back in 2017 when Sean McVay was hired as the youngest head coach in NFL history by the Los Angeles Rams, one of the most underrated moves made in the first couple of months was signing Kayvon Webster at cornerback.
At the time, Webster was a cornerback with only two career starts to his name after four seasons with the Denver Broncos. But when hearing some of the praise he received from former teammates for shining when given the opportunity, it was easy to understand the decision by the Rams to give it a shot with Webster.
Not to mention, Webster already had an advantage over some of his new teammates in Los Angeles since Wade Phillips was recently hired as the team’s new defensive coordinator as well, meaning Webster was already familiar with the system.
Deep down, the Rams seemed to feel confident enough that Webster was one of those players who just needed the right opportunity to live up to this potential, which appeared to be the case when he earned 11 starts in 2017 while making a case to be around for the long run.
Unfortunately, the main reason why Webster only appeared in 11 games that year for Los Angeles was due to a ruptured Achilles suffered in December, putting a devastating end to his first season with the team.
To top the frustration off, Webster was released by the Rams a few months later after failing a physical, which eventually led to the cornerback signing a one-year deal with the Houston Texans for the 2018 season.
Unfortunately, Webster’s time in Texans turned out to be a complete bust once again after injuries limited him to appearing in just two games along with being in search of a new home in the next coupe of weeks when he hits the free agency market once again.
All things considered, Webster has enough red flags from the previous two seasons that most teams wouldn’t even consider touching since it seems like too much of a risk.
However, if the Rams find themselves in need of adding depth at the cornerback position as a result of Sam Shields and Troy Hill ending up elsewhere since they’re about to hit free agency as well, Webster may be worth giving another shot.
Keep in mind that Los Angeles felt confident enough in bringing Webster on two years ago for a reason, and if there’s any chance of believing the same heading into 2019, why not consider this possibility again?
Plus, as bad as it sounds to point out, Webster could not only provide some depth to the cornerback position with the hope of Phillips helping him return to his old ways, but also a discounted rate seems like it may come into play due to the previous injuries.
Cornerback may not be a top priority for the Rams heading into the upcoming free agency period since linebacker and the offensive line are just a few of their top priorities, but when it comes to Webster, this move seems worth considering as a potential steal, similar to two years ago.
