With the Los Angeles Rams unlikely to re-sign Rodger Saffold, there will be plenty of teams expressing interest in the veteran to help boost the offensive line.
Ever since the conclusion of Super Bowl 53, one of the biggest questions surrounding the Los Angeles Rams has been what the team would decide to do with Rodger Saffold on the offensive line.
Despite spending the last nine year with the Rams, there was some speculation that Saffold had played his final game with the team in the Super Bowl loss to the New England Patriots since as much as they would prefer to have him back, money sometimes comes into play.
It’s not that Los Angeles wouldn’t prefer to keep him around for another season to increase their chances of earning another trip to the Super Bowl, but deep down, the team knew the cost to keep him around may be too expensive.
Turns out, this appears to be exactly the case as Matt Verderame from FanSided reported on Thursday how it’s unlikely that Saffold returns to the team, meaning it looks like the Indiana product is set to hit the open market in free agency.
Hearing this news will be a tough pill for some Rams fans to swallow after looking at how much Saffold has done for the offense over the years, both good and bad.
Two years ago, Los Angeles was viewed as a team with a horrendous offensive line before Sean McVay came on board to make the necessary adjustments to provide better protection for Jared Goff, and Saffold certainly deserves credit for contributing to the turnaround.
Now, the next question becomes which teams will express interest in Saffold now that his time with the Rams appears to be over since there are plenty of offenses across the league that would love to have him present on their offensive line.
These kinds of moves are never easy in the NFL since there was some hope that Los Angeles and Saffold would be able to work out some sort of discounted deal to keep him around, but on a positive note, at least there will be plenty of candidates to help replace the guard.
Knowing McVay, the Rams head coach has been preparing for this possibility with Saffold for weeks, and already has a few candidates in mind to make sure Los Angeles continues to be in the best shape possible for another Super Bowl run.
