Allowing Ndamukong Suh to test free agency right approach by Rams
By Dan Parzych
Sean McVay discussed at the combine how the Los Angeles Rams will continue talks with Ndamukong Suh, but also allow the veteran to hit the open market in free agency.
Around this time last year, the Los Angeles Rams were viewed as a long shot to land Ndamukong Suh following his release from the Miami Dolphins, mainly because of how much it would cost to bring him on board.
Not to mention, the Rams were dealing with a few players of their own such as Aaron Donald who were looking for new deals, so the thought of Suh joining the defense was brushed off right away by many.
As football fans know, Los Angeles was able to convince Suh to sign on a hefty one-year, $14 million deal with the team to continue showing that Sean McVay‘s squad was in the ultimate win-now mode to put them in the best position possible to make a Super Bowl run.
Coming up short the way they did to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 53 was obviously frustrating for numerous reasons, but the good news for the Rams is all sings point to this team being a top contender once again in 2019.
Of course, whether Suh is back for a second year with the team, well that’s one of the current mysteries at the moment as Los Angeles heads into free agency.
Rightfully so, the Rams would love to see Suh back on defense since his presence alone playing alongside Donald can be best described as a nightmare for all opponents. But just like every other player in Suh’s situation, money could turn out to be one of the biggest deciding factors for Los Angeles since as much as they would love to reward the veteran with a hefty contract, they have other ares to focus on too.
With McVay and the Rams currently in Indianapolis for the combine, the head coach was asked about the situation with Suh by ESPN’s Josina Anderson, which the response almost seemed too perfect.
In a way, this is the best approach that Los Angeles could take since the last thing they want to do is jump the gun by throwing out some sort of insane offer to Suh they will regret later on if they need to spend the money elsewhere.
Plus, from a competitive standpoint, the best case scenario for the Rams would be if Suh decides he would be willing to take less money after testing the open market to return to the NFC champions with the hope of achieving the ultimate goal of finally winning the Super Bowl.
Only time will tell when it comes to seeing if this ends up happening, but at least it’s good to see Los Angeles take this approach with Suh, and here’s to hoping when the time does come for the veteran to decide, he is in fact back in the picture alongside Donald on defense for the Rams.
