Clay Matthews has plenty to offer Los Angeles Rams on defense
By Dan Parzych
According to a recent report, the Los Angeles Rams are a potential landing spot for Clay Matthews in free agency.
Despite recently agreeing to a one-year deal with Dante Fowler Jr. after coming over in the middle of last season, the Los Angeles Rams were still expected to add depth to the linebacker position this offseason, whether it was through free agency or April’s draft.
While it was great to see the Rams acquire Fowler when they did along with Cory Littleton putting together his best NFL season in 2018, the defense turned out to be in better shape than expected at the linebacker position, although there’s always room for improvement.
With Los Angeles recently using a second-round tender on Littleton, and Fowler now playing under a one-year deal to prove himself worthy of a heftier contract later on, the Rams will play it safe rather than sorry when it comes to looking into adding another linebacker this offseason.
So with the latest rumor surrounding the Rams being a potential landing spot for Clay Matthews, this really shouldn’t come as a surprise at all, even if he is up there in age.
Despite the fact that Matthews will be 33 by the start of next season, the veteran linebacker could still bring plenty to the table for Los Angeles on defense, whether it involves mentoring some of the younger guys or simply just providing some extra depth.
After spending the last 10 years with the Green Bay Packers, Matthews has quite the impressive resume ranging from winning a Super Bowl to earning six trips to the Pro Bowl.
For a team that will be motivated more than ever to return to the Super Bowl after their embarrassing performance against the New England Patriots in February, Los Angeles should welcome the opportunity to bring Matthews on board if the interest is there.
Of course, the money factor will most likely come into play since the last thing the Rams want to do is overpay Matthews if they’re competing with other teams, but at least the NFC champions have the California factor working in their favor if needed.
If not, well at least there will be plenty of other options for Los Angeles to consider at linebacker if Matthews decides to go elsewhere.
