According to a recent report, the Los Angeles Rams will meet with Blake Bortles on Monday about a potential backup role for the 2019 season.

Depending on how things play out with Sean Mannion, the Los Angeles Rams could be in search of finding a new backup quarterback to Jared Goff for the 2019 season.

Over the last two seasons, the Rams have felt confident enough in Mannion’s ability to be the backup to Goff, but also it’s been tough to determine his value since he really hasn’t played in a meaningful game.

With this in mind, one would assume that Los Angeles would have little trouble convincing Mannion to return for the 2019 season under a new deal.

But since the interest could be there for some teams knowing that Mannion has benefitted from playing under Sean McVay over the last two seasons, the Rams are in a difficult position since they could lose their backup over another team offering more money.

If this does happen to be the case, who exactly would Los Angeles consider as their next backup quarterback? While the market has numerous quarterbacks for the Rams to consider if Mannion does end up on a new team, it appears the NFC champions have at least one candidate in mind with Blake Bortles.

Before some Rams fans freak out over the possibility of this happening after seeing how things played out with the former first-round pick with the Jacksonville Jaguars, keep in mind this idea may not be all that terrible.

For starters, Bortles was in a difficult position this past season since the Jaguars’ offense was on the younger side, and didn’t exactly have the best receivers to work with, although having Leonard Fournette certainly helps from time to time.

It was only two years ago in which Bortles seemed like he was finally moving in the right direction after helping Jacksonville reach the AFC Championship before falling to the New England Patriots. And while it was frustrating to watch Bortles take a step back in 2018, a fresh start on a team like the Rams could work out well for both parties.

One of the main reasons why Los Angeles was so high on McVay back in 2017 was due to his history of quarterback development, and even though Bortles is a candidate for the backup job behind Goff, this could still work wonders.

The NFL has seen too many teams suffer over the years by failing to have a reliable backup quarterback when their starter goes down, and while the goal is to obviously make sure Goff remains healthy, the Rams need to make sure they have another quarterback they can rely on.

Could Bortles be the answer Los Angeles is looking for? Rams fans will have a better idea after Monday, but at least from an experience perspective, Bortles seems worthy of the consideration.
