Rams possibly considering a quarterback in 2019 NFL Draft makes sense
By Dan Parzych
Despite recently signing Blake Bortles, the Los Angeles Rams could still look to the 2019 NFL Draft to add another quarterback to the roster.
Before the Los Angeles Rams, the 2019 NFL Draft will officially be underway, and while the team may not consider a quarterback early on, there’s always the chance of selecting one in the later rounds.
Three years ago, the Rams made an investment by trading up in the first round with the Tennessee Titans to land Jared Goff at No. 1 following a stellar career at California.
Concerns were high at first after a rough rookie campaign in which Goff went 0-7, but also this wasn’t entirely his fault since Los Angeles didn’t exactly do the best job in providing him with a proper offensive line and receiving corps.
Thanks to Sean McVay turning the offense around over the last two seasons, Goff is now considered one of the top quarterbacks heading into his fourth NFL season. And while the Rams did a great job at improving their situation for Goff’s backup by recently signing Blake Bortles, this won’t prevent the team from using this year’s draft to examine the position.
Even though the former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback just recently came on board for a one-year deal, there’s already speculation that Bortles will be a one-year rental for the Rams with the hope of developing one year under McVay before landing another job elsewhere.
Obviously, it’s still way too early to determine whether this will actually be the case since Bortles hasn’t even been with the team for a full month, but also if this were to happen, it would make even more sense for Los Angeles to select another quarterback in the upcoming draft.
The good news for the Rams is unlike some teams across the NFL, they know Goff isn’t going away anytime soon, and don’t feel the pressure of trying to find their next franchise quarterback in the upcoming draft.
From an insurance perspective, Los Angeles would most likely prefer to see things work out for the best with Bortles in which he ends up sticking around as Goff’s backup for the long run, but also they understand his desire to start again if given the opportunity down the road.
With all of this in mind, it seems like only a matter of time before the Rams are linked to potential quarterback prospects for the upcoming draft. And if this does end up being the case, at least the young quarterback will be in great hands by having the opportunity to work with one of the best the NFL has to offer in McVay.
