Nick Bosa joining 49ers makes rivalry with Rams even more interesting
By Dan Parzych
The Los Angeles Rams watched Nick Bosa join the NFC West on Thursday after the former Ohio State star went No. 2 to the San Francisco 49ers.
When looking at how all of the rumors surrounding Kyler Murray going to the Arizona Cardinals ended up being true, the Los Angeles Rams knew there was a strong chance that Nick Bosa would most likely go No. 2 to the San Francisco 49ers.
Dating back to this time last year, Bosa was already considered a top prospect for the draft in 2019 thanks to an already impressive career at Ohio State along with success in football running in the Bosa family.
Shortly after the Cardinals made it official with Murray in the first round of Thursday’s draft, the 49ers did the same with Bosa to provide a much-needed boost to the defensive side of the football.
Around this time last year, there was plenty of excitement surrounding the rivalry between the Rams and 49ers reaching new levels after the team decided to commit for the long run with Jimmy Garoppolo under center.
But now that San Francisco’s defense has Bosa part of the picture to make things a little more difficult for Jared Goff twice a year, it makes the rivalry with Los Angeles even more interesting to follow moving forward.
Despite the Rams being the more successful team over the last two seasons, keep in mind the 49ers were selected by many as a potential sleeper in the NFC in 2018 before Garoppolo’s season came to a crashing end in September due to a torn ACL.
Now that Garoppolo is on track to be ready to go for Week 1, and the defense received a major upgrade with Bosa, Los Angeles knows that San Francisco is the last team to sleep on next season.
Winning the NFC West may sound like a bit of a stretch since despite looking good on paper, the 49ers still have plenty to prove before they can fall into the serious contender category.
But after landing Bosa, San Francisco is certainly moving in the right direction to send a message to the Rams in regards to the NFC West being far from a guarantee in 2019.
Without question, Bosa is the kind of player that can single-handedly take over games, and one can only imagine how Goff is going to feel over the next couple of years keeping an extra eye on his whereabouts.
