4. Long puts cornerback in better shape beyond 2019

At the moment, the Rams are fortunate enough to have a solid duo at the cornerback position thanks to Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib, but what will happen after the 2019 season is still a mystery.

While Los Angeles continues to weigh whether Peters is worth keeping around for the long run as he enters the final year of his contract, the team also knows that Talib isn’t getting any younger.

In other words, the Rams have some questions in need of answering on defense at cornerback once 2019 is in the books, although the main focus right now is on the upcoming season.

Still, Los Angeles knew the draft would be the perfect opportunity to add depth to the position in case one, both, or neither of these players are back for the 2020 season, which is where David Long comes into play.

The fact that Los Angeles can afford to be patient with Long as a rookie with his tackling ability and physical style of play since he’ll be behind Peters and Talib on the depth chart gives the Rams an extra advantage for the 2019 season.

But after 2019, that’s when the Long selection will hopefully pay off in a big way for Los Angeles.
