The Los Angeles Rams added depth to the linebacker position by signing Josh Carraway this week.

Leading up to the 2019 NFL Draft, linebacker was one of the positions the Los Angeles Rams were expected to focus on, although the argument can be made they’re in pretty solid shape thanks to players like Dante Fowler Jr. and Cory Littleton.

Still, since there is a little uncertainty beyond the 2019 season, the Rams were expected to look to the draft to add some depth, and while it was great to see the team use a seventh-round pick on Dakota Allen, this didn’t seem like it enough.

That’s where Josh Carraway comes into play after Los Angeles decided to sign the 2017 seventh-round pick on Thursday with the hope that the former TCU star can provide a little competition to the linebacker position.

While Carraway earning one of the spots on the 53-man roster for the 2019 season may seem like a long shot at the moment, spending the last two seasons on the practice squads of the Tennessee Titans and Washington Redskins could provide a little extra motivation.

Back in 2017 when Carraway was selected in the seventh round by the Titans, the hope was that he would turn out to be a late steal, but obviously that hasn’t been the case since the Rams will be his third attempt to make it work with a team.

The good news for Carraway is the young linebacker will have plenty of opportunities to prove himself from now until the end of preseason since Los Angeles clearly saw some sort of potential, or they wouldn’t be wasting their time.

Keep in mind that Los Angeles has a strong history under Sean McVay of evaluating great talent, no matter what the situation may look like for some players with failed attempts on other teams.

Does this mean Carraway could end up being the steal the Rams are hoping for? As mentioned before, the chances of Carraway making a roster spot are an absolute long shot at the moment, but that’s one of the best things about the NFL.

With a little extra competition now at the linebacker position, Carraway could not only be feeling a little extra motivated to earn a spot, but also this could make some of the other players at the position work harder on their end as well.
