After extending Troy Hill, Rams should focus on Cory Littleton next
By Dan Parzych
Now that Troy Hill’s contract situation is taken care of, the Los Angeles Rams may want to switch their attention to Cory Littleton.
Despite all of the great additions made by the Los Angeles Rams last offseason with the team in a win-now mode for the Super Bowl, linebacker was the one position in which there were some uncertainties.
As fans now know, the Rams ended up being better at the position than originally expected since they not only took a risk on former first-round pick Dante Fowler Jr. through a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but also Cory Littleton emerged out of nowhere to make an impact.
Back in 2016, Los Angeles decided to take a risk on Littleton after signing him as an undrafted free agent, and watching the linebacker come off his first Pro Bowl season in 2018 shows they certainly made the right choice.
Even more exciting, Littleton officially signed his tender with the Rams for the 2019 season that will pay him $3.0.95 million, which the team better appreciate since that is an absolute steal when comparing his production.
With that being said, one of the most popular topics of discussion this offseason has been whether Los Angeles should strongly consider signing Littleton to an extension to not only get it taken care of, but also to make sure he’s around for the long run.
While one season certainly doesn’t determine what kind of career a player is going to have in the NFL, the Rams don’t seem too concerned over the possibility of Littleton taking a step back in 2019, because he’s that good of a player.
No one needs to explain to the Rams just how much of a steal they got with using the tender on Littleton, but also the team knows this isn’t going to last beyond the 2019 season.
Sooner or later, Los Angeles will face one of those tough decisions in which they will need to figure out whether Littleton is worth keeping around for the long run, and assuming that is the case, the next task becomes figuring out what it will cost to make him happy.
The Rams may have the advantage on their side in regards to being able to wait this situation out with Littleton, but after addressing Troy Hill on Thursday, why not just keep the trend going?
Clearly, Littleton has turned out to be great fit for Los Angeles on defense, and after only three seasons, the best seems like it has yet to come for the linebacker, so maybe the Rams should just consider taking care of their Pro Bowler now instead of waiting.
