During a recent ranking of backup quarterback situations, the Los Angeles Rams finished fourth with Blake Bortles.

Early on in the offseason, it was pretty clear the Los Angeles Rams were going to move on from Sean Mannion, which turned out to be exactly the case, as the team decided to sign Blake Bortles to a one-year deal to become the new backup quarterback.

Even though there are no reasons for concern surrounding Jared Goff staying healthy, the NFL has seen too many teams suffer over the years when their starting quarterback goes down, and the backup turns out to be unreliable.

Things may not have worked out for the best with Bortles over the last five years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but hopefully a fresh start on a new team in Los Angeles helps the former first-round pick turn his career around.

As bad as it sounds to say, the Rams seem to know that Bortles will most likely end up being a one-year rental since all signs point to him using this upcoming season to learn under Sean McVay before looking for a potential starting job in 2020.

But at least for now, Bortles provides Los Angeles with plenty of reasons to feel confident over their backup quarterback situation since his previous starting experience in Jacksonville alone gives him a major advantage compared to other players across the league.

With that being said, the folks at Bleacher Report recently put together a list ranking each team’s backup quarterback situation, and to no one’s surprise, the Rams with Bortles rightfully earned the No. 4 spot.

Around this time last year if the list had been conducted, chances are that Los Angeles would have found themselves near the bottom since the verdict is still out on Mannion’s ability since he has yet to appear in a meaningful game.

Obviously, the goal for 2019 will be to never need Bortles since this would mean that Goff most likely suffered some sort of injury, but at least the Rams will be better prepared just in case.

Some will try to argue that Los Angeles should be higher on the list over teams like the Tennessee Titans or Washington Redskins, but No. 4 seems fair all things considered.

Due to McVay’s history of quarterback development, the Rams never would have even considered Bortles if they didn’t strongly believe in his abilities as a backup, so here’s to hoping the list is spot on with Los Angeles being in great shape at backup.
