Clay Matthews is expected to miss 4-6 weeks for the Los Angeles Rams after suffering a broken jaw during Thursday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
By recording a sack in every game (six total) to start the 2019 season, Clay Matthews has been making a strong case to being considered the best addition to the Los Angeles Rams.
After watching the Green Bay Packers make the difficult decision to move on from the veteran linebacker following 10 seasons, there were some critics who believed signing Matthews was a mistake for the Rams.
Thanks to his amazing hot start, no one is questioning the decision by Los Angeles anymore since Matthews only needed five games to top his sack total from a year ago (3.5), but unfortunately it looks like the defense has a new obstacle to deal with.
While coming up short to the Seattle Seahawks 30-29 on Thursday was already frustrating enough to deal with, Rams fans found out the unfortunate news Friday night that Matthews had suffered a broken jaw in the loss.
From a depth perspective, Los Angeles certainly has plenty of other players ready to step up in Matthews’ absence, but also since linebacker was already an area with questions entering training camp, this latest news involving Matthews hurts.
The Rams were already facing heavy pressure and criticism following a second loss in a row since they now trail both the Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers in the division standings, but this loss with Matthews makes things more complicated.
All of a sudden, Los Angeles finds themselves needing to adjust for at least a month without one of their most exciting defensive players in Matthews, which is always easier said than done.
Knowing Matthews, the veteran linebacker will bounce back stronger than ever once fully healed to provide the Rams with that extra boost on the defensive side of the football during the final stretch of the 2019 season.
Since Los Angeles all of a sudden has some extra work moving forward when it comes to earning one of the playoff spots in the NFC, here’s to hoping they can manage to get by without Matthews in the meantime.
It’s certainly not going to be easy, but unfortunately the Rams have no choice at this point.
