Los Angeles Rams fans will always appreciate Jay Gruden and the Washington Redskins for the gift of Sean McVay as head coach.

Even though the recent firing of Jay Gruden by the Washington Redskins has nothing to do with the Los Angeles Rams, the fan base can’t help but feel appreciative towards the organization since the former head coach helped the team land Sean McVay.

Back in 2017, the Rams were looking for a head coach that could help Jared Goff elevate his game to a completely different level, and while hiring McVay as the youngest head coach in NFL history was viewed as a huge risk, it certainly paid off big time.

Between Los Angeles looking to win their third NFC West title in a row during the 2019 season on top of their appearance in the Super Bowl last February, McVay has done an incredible job at quickly making the Rams a serious contender.

Originally, the game plan surrounding McVay seemed like Los Angeles would at least need a year or two while the team adjusted to his style of play, but clearly it’s been the complete opposite.

As for the Redskins, as mentioned before, the Rams took a huge risk in 2017 by hiring McVay after looking what he was able to accomplish in three seasons as offensive coordinator for the Redskins.

Most importantly, one of the main factors that played into the decision by Los Angeles to hire McVay was the role played in helping Kirk Cousins develop, as the Rams hoped to see the same kind of success, if not better, with Goff.

Three seasons later, McVay and the Rams continue to be one of the top teams in the NFC, but unfortunately the Redskins can best be described as a hot mess still in search of their first win in 2019 along with the recent firing of Gruden.

Football fans can say whatever they want about Gruden’s inability to coach the Redskins since he only had one playoff appearance to his name, but what’s even more mind blowing to take into consideration is all of the current head coaches that used to be part of his staff.

Clearly, Washington fans are kicking themselves wishing that McVay had somehow became the head coach a few years ago instead of keeping Gruden around, but it also be noted that Kyle Shanahan and Matt LaFleur used to be around as well.

Obviously, there was no way of knowing back then that either of these individuals would go on to become successful head coaches in the NFL, but at least the Rams somewhat benefitted from Gruden being around all these years.

One can only imagine how different things would have been in Los Angeles over the last three seasons if McVay’s success in Washington didn’t catch the attention of the front office, and the argument can be made this never would have happened if Gruden weren’t around.

So while the Redskins and their fans continue to deal with the aftermath of Gruden being out as head coach, at least when it comes to McVay, the Rams will forever appreciate all that took place many years ago to set up their current situation.
