With Todd Gurley officially out for the Los Angeles Rams in Week 6, it’s time for Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown to shine in the backfield.

Entering the 2019 season, the Los Angeles Rams were expected to rely on Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson more in the backfield to help take some of the pressure off Todd Gurley.

After the results of the NFC Championship and Super Bowl last winter, it was clear that something was going on with Gurley’s knee, whether the Rams wanted to admit it or not.

Even in the offseason early on, Los Angeles made it clear they would be taking a different approach with Gurley instead of giving the two-time Pro Bowler the usual workload.

Through the first three games, there wasn’t that much frustration over the lack of carries for Gurley since the Rams were winning football games, which is the most important factor of all.

But after the results of the previous two games with losses to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks, the frustration has been building up even more over Gurley’s lack of carries (20 combined) in 2019.

To top the frustration off, Gurley has already been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers due to a quad injury, meaning the Rams will finally be using Brown and Henderson more in the backfield.

While Brown started the year off on a hot note by rushing for two touchdowns against the Carolina Panthers, the Rams backup has only seen 15 carries over the last four games, although those numbers are way better than the single carry by Henderson in Week 1.

Whatever the reason behind Sean McVay‘s decision not to use Brown and Henderson more over the first five games, all that matters now is the approach by the head coach heading into Sunday’s contest against the 49ers since this could arguably be viewed as a must-win game.

With the Rams currently sitting in third place behind the 49ers and Seahawks, the last thing Los Angeles can afford to do is suffer another loss to drop the team to .500 on the season.

Despite some of the current issues Los Angeles is dealing with on the offensive line, here’s to hoping that Brown and Henderson can find a way to take advantage of the extra playing time for the Rams.

If Brown and Henderson can find a way to make the necessary impact on offense to help put the Rams in great position to win, a game without Gurley won’t seem so bad for Los Angeles, although San Francisco’s defense will certainly make things challenging.
