The San Francisco 49ers made a clear statement to the Los Angeles Rams and the rest of the league in general about being the team to beat within the NFC West.
Normally, the Seattle Seahawks have been considered the top rivalry to the Los Angeles Rams within the NFC West, but things seemed to be heading in a new direction when the San Francisco 49ers committed to Jimmy Garoppolo for the long run.
While the Rams finally found a quarterback to build the franchise around in Jared Goff after using the top overall pick in 2016 on the former California star, the years of frustration for the 49ers seemed to finally pay off after landing Garoppolo.
All of a sudden, the NFC West seemed to have two young quarterbacks that would not only continue to get better with experience, but also make the division even more competitive for years to come.
Even if Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks have technically been the biggest threat to Los Angeles in the division over the last few years, Sunday’s loss to San Francisco made it clear the 49ers have officially taken over the role.
San Francisco always felt confident in Garoppolo being able to take the team to new levels from a competitive perspective, but the defense has actually played a major role in the team’s impressive 5-0 start.
Just look at Sunday’s game against the Rams in which the 49ers took advantage of a struggling offensive line in the Rams while holding the team to scoring just seven points, and it seems pretty clear that San Francisco has become a top contender.
After winning back-to-back NFC West titles on top of their Super Bowl appearance this past winter, it was easy to make the case for Los Angeles being the early favorites to finish on top of the division for a third year in a row during the 2019 season.
But after seeing how things played out in Week 6, it appears the Rams have been dethroned by the 49ers, and could be on the verge of desperation mode if the losses continue to pile up.
Just like every other team, San Francisco still has a long way to go since it’s only the middle of October, and plenty could change over the next few months, but at least moving forward, the 49ers have earned the right to be labeled the new team to beat in the NFC West.
Rams fans may not want to hear this, but sadly it’s the truth, and Week 6 made that pretty clear when seeing how easy the 49ers made it look at times during their victory.
