Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams have suffered three losses in a row, with the latest coming on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.
For the first time since coming on board as head coach in 2017, Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams are in the middle of a three-game losing streak after coming up short 20-7 against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6.
After suffering two tough losses in a row to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks, Sunday’s meeting with the 49ers was viewed as a must-win situation for the Rams by many, especially since they currently are in third place in the NFC West standings.
Now that Los Angeles has dug themselves a deeper hole in the division race, McVay finds himself dealing with a new level of pressure as a head coach since he’s never experienced three losses in a row.
From struggling with the adjustments to the offensive line to all of the questions continuing to sound Todd Gurley‘s ability to stay healthy, there have been plenty of bumps along the road for the Rams so far in 2019.
Despite how things played out during Super Bowl 53 back in February, Los Angeles was considered to be one of the early favorites in the NFC to make another run at the big game this season since the talent was there on both sides of the football.
Plenty could happen from now until the end of December, and the Rams could literally find a way to turn things around before it’s too late over the next few weeks, but also McVay deserves the same kind of treatment most coaches in his position receive.
Based off the amazing progress from his first two seasons with the team that consisted of back-to-back NFC West titles along with the Super Bowl 53 appearance, it’s clear that Los Angeles hit the jackpot with McVay back in 2017.
But also, just because McVay did an incredible job at making the Rams serious contenders in the NFC quicker than expected doesn’t mean he deserves different treatment if the losses continue to pile up for Los Angeles.
Realistically, even if the Rams end up missing out on the playoffs for the first time since the 2016 season this year, Los Angeles is going to keep McVay around since even the best of teams sometimes come up short in their goal of reaching the playoffs.
Still, when looking at all of the money invested in this team for the long run on top of the high expectations from the beginning of September, anything short of a playoff berth this season will be considered a huge disappointment for Los Angeles.
So with the Rams scheduled to take on another desperate team in the Atlanta Falcons for Week 7, here’s to hoping that McVay can find a way to make the necessary adjustments to help this surprise losing streak come to an end.
Otherwise, any talk surrounding McVay and the hot seat will only continue to heat up moving forward, even if it sounds absolutely crazy to think about with all of the previous success surrounding this team since 2017.
