As surprising as Tuesday’s trade involving Marcus Peters was, the Los Angeles Rams will be better off in the long run.

Entering the 2019 season, one of the biggest questions surrounding the Los Angeles Rams was whether the team should give in, and reward Marcus Peters with a hefty contract.

After pulling off a trade last year with the Kansas City Chiefs to acquire the cornerback, the Rams have seen plenty of great moments from Peters, including a few impressive interceptions returned for touchdowns.

Despite how much of a headache Peters appeared to be at times both on and off the field as a member of the Chiefs, the cornerback certainly made up for it in other areas, especially when it came to producing turnovers.

So to hear the news on Tuesday that Peters would now be heading to the Baltimore Ravens after Los Angeles agreed to a trade came as a surprise to most fans, but also has them wondering if another potential move could be in the works.

With Aqib Talib recently heading to IR as a result of a rib injury suffered in Week 5 against the Seattle Seahawks, the Rams clearly aren’t in any position to give up on another cornerback in Peters since he was easily their best player at the position.

But assuming that Los Angeles does in fact make some sort of move to put the defense in better position at cornerback, from a long-term perspective, the Rams could actually benefit from Peters no longer being around.

For starters, the money previously invested in Peters helps clear up some salary cap space, and the Rams no longer have to weight out whether he would be worthy of a hefty long-term deal from the organization.

As previously mentioned, it’s been incredible to watch Peters be a turnover machine at times for the Rams dating back to last season, but also there have been numerous times in which receivers have beaten him with ease.

Not to mention, fans remember well some of the struggles surrounding Peters last season when Talib was sidelined with an injury, making it seem like he was incapable of handling the responsibilities of being a true No. 1 cornerback.

In time, fans will hopefully receive more details over why the Rams pulled off a surprise trade involving Peters when looking at their current situation at cornerback, but also as far as the long run is concerned, this seems like the best move.

Knowing the Rams, there is already some sort of plan in place to adjust on defense without Peters, so any concern should be viewed as unnecessary at this point.
