1. Newton could push Goff to perform better
First off, after looking at all of the money invested in Goff after rewarding the Rams quarterback with a hefty extension back in September, any speculation over Newton having what it takes to win the starting job in Los Angeles would be ridiculous to even consider.
If anything, the addition of an experienced starter like Newton could be exactly what Goff needs to help motivate his game to new levels since this current season is the perfect example of how he’s still a work in progress.
After rewarding Goff due to the previous progress made over the last two seasons, the Rams seemed hopeful the California product would in fact be in for another monster season, despite some of the concerns with the new offensive line.
Los Angeles is certainly in great shape at the moment after the bye week sitting at 5-3, but also Goff’s poor play at times could arguably have resulted in a few more wins for the Rams.
Newton may not seem like the preference for Goff when it comes to a veteran pushing him to get better, but his previous experience in Carolina could come in handy.
As previously mentioned, all of this is complete speculation at the moment, and the Panthers would first need to decide to move on from Newton just to see this have an actual shot at happening.
But since it never hurts to speculate, just imagine how great of shape the Rams would be at backup quarterback in 2020 if this scenario involving Newton had a legitimate shot to happen.
