Darrell Henderson’s rookie campaign with Rams has been major disappointment
By Dan Parzych
Los Angeles Rams fans expected more from Darrell Henderson during his rookie campaign in 2019.
Back in the spring, the Los Angeles Rams felt confident enough that Darrell Henderson would be a great addition to the backfield alongside Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown to give the offense a dominant trio at running back.
After looking at what Henderson was able to accomplish throughout his career with the Memphis Tigers, it was easy to understand the decision by the Rams to add the rookie running back to Sean McVay‘s offense.
While Henderson still has the opportunity to turn out to be a great selection from the 2019 NFL Draft, it has been frustrating to watch the rookie running back only see limited action throughout his first NFL season.
Sure, the argument can be made that Los Angeles hasn’t been running the football as much as they normally would since the Rams have been trailing in more games, one would think that a head coach like McVay still would have found a way to make him more involved.
The fact that Los Angeles is entering Week 13 against the Arizona Cardinals, and only has 33 carries to his name so far for 123 yards shows Henderson hasn’t received as much action as originally expected in 2019.
Even if the argument can be made that the main focus for Los Angeles should be the long run, it’s still frustrating not to wonder what could have been for the Rams on offense this season if Henderson was more involved.
With five games to go, including Sunday’s meeting with the Arizona Cardinals, maybe McVay will find a way to surprise the fan base by finally finding a way to get Henderson more carries to potentially become a surprise factor.
At this point, the Rams need to consider all options on offense since they already face the difficult challenge of playing catch up in the NFC playoff race trailing the Minnesota Vikings by two games.
This time of year is always the perfect time for unexpected players to step up when needed the most, and after all this time, maybe Henderson can be used as some sort of surprise weapon to catch the Cardinals off guard.
Long shot or not, at least the Rams would have nothing to lose if they did decide to give Henderson more of an opportunity, right?
