LA Rams: Evaluating the cornerstone positions heading into 2020
By Larry Brake
Develop depth via draft
The Rams will have the 2020 and 2021 drafts to choose and develop his replacement if the team is unable to sign him to a contract extension.Hopefully, he will stay in LA. The cornerback spot is filled with Ramsey for this upcoming season.
Fourth, LA currently has no edge rusher for the 2020 season. Fowler will want a big contract, too. To make matters worse, DT Michael Brockers and ILB Corey Littleton become free agents along with Fowler. All project to land significant contracts in free agency. With so many contracts expiring simultaneously, the Rams will be hard pressed to free up enough salary cap to keep everyone on the roster.
The defensive line is already anchored by one of the best players in recent years. DT Aaron Donald is still the unblockable force at tackle, and his play elevates the play of those around him. Hopefully, the Rams will be able to re-sign these three, even if for one-year deals.
The Rams play in the very tough NFC West Division. In 2019, they were a few plays away from being a playoff team. With limits to what the team can do both financially and in the 2020 NFL Draft, it will be interesting to see how the Rams set up the team’s roster in the upcoming months.
