Sign, Pay, Cut, Scout, Repeat

The LA Rams felt a need to fix their pass defense, so they addressed that by adding Peters and signing FA defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh in free agency.  That led to an appearance in Super Bowl 53, where the offense sputtered. For the 2019 season, the team had overcompensated once more, flooding their offensive skill players with sacks of cash, all the while ignoring to reload the offensive line.  As a result, the Rams missed the playoffs, and must now compensate by refurbishing the offensive line.

And in the process of doing so, the team must shed, restructure, or trade away overpriced contracts.  Which depletes the team’s resources for adding cheap talent via the NFL Draft. So the team signs more free agents. Thus the vicious cycle becomes self perpetuating.  Canabalizing one part of the team to reinforce areas of the team found lacking in the face of the fiercest competition in the NFL.

More from Rams Free Agency

The LA Rams organization does not pause in its pursuit of building a team capable of winning an NFL Championship.  But this year, this off-season, the team MUST do exactly that. Each move this off-season, whether to sign a veteran ripe for a solid comeback in NFL Free Agency , selecting new prospects during the 2020 NFL Draft, or simply extending an opportunity to start on the team to players who have grown into the role, must be weighed carefully.

This is a time where the Rams must be surgically precise with their personnel moves. The team must free up enough cap space to ensure the team has the flexibility to sign players who will help the team. Afterwards, the front office must assemble a roster similar to the intricate way a person assembles a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle.
