LA Rams 7-Round mock draft 2.1 heading into NFL Combine
By Larry Brake
LA Rams select A.J. Terrell, CB Clemson
The LA Rams replace Ramsey with another big cornerback. A.J. Terrell stands 6-feet-1 weighing 190 pounds. Terrell will compete at the nickel cornerback role until he is ready to become the team’s shutdown corner.
His size will allow him to cover the pass-receiving tight ends around the league. Unlike some slot cornerbacks, Terrell will be able to challenge tight-ends at the line of scrimmage physically, and then maintain close coverage throughout their routes.. And he will be able to keep up with even the fastest slot receivers.
Right now, the LA Rams have both Troy Hill and Nickell Robey-Coleman to cover the split receivers. Pro Football Focus (PFF) ranked them in the top 20 of NFL cornerbacks. In addition, the team has the 2019 sleeper in cornerback David Long Jr. Terrell will make a nice addition to that dynamic trio of blanket coverage corners.
At Clemson, Terrell played three seasons. He made 101 total tackles, intercepted six passes and ran one back for a touchdown.
The scouting website, thedraftnetwork.com, reports the following:
"Terrific athlete with excellent pattern-matching skills, quick feet, clean transitions and fluid hips. Love how tight he plays in coverage, allowing little cushion and staying connected defending quick game. Finds consistent success in press coverage with excellent balance, patience, hand usage and willingness to crowd receivers in the contact window…"
Corners will be featured on Sunday, March 1st in Indianapolis. Terrell should be one of the bigger corners at the Combine. Expect the NFL to move towards bigger defenders as it matches the move to bigger receivers.
This next player will be a steady performer on offense.
