LA Rams 2 round 3 picks change NFL draft strategy before FA
By Larry Brake
The LA Rams will be able to get a better pick with the additional round 3 compensatory pick in the upcoming NFL Draft
The NFL awarded the LA Rams a compensatory third-round pick to compensate for the loss of Rodger Saffold. There was earlier speculation that pick would be awarded in the fourth round. Now, the Rams will have the chance to change their draft strategy to take a player earlier than anticipated. You never know how the free-agent market will play out.
The Rams will have the 84th and 104th overall selection in the upcoming draft. LA could use one of those selections to move into the first round via trade. Why wouldn’t they make a deal to get a generational talent at any given position? According to the 2020 NFL Trade value chart, the Rams now have enough value in day two to move up to a day one pick if they so desire. The Rams pick at 52 (380), 84 (170), and 104 (86). Combined, the value of 636 is the equivalent of picking between 29 and 30 in round one.
Also, the Rams could use those third-round picks to take offensive linemen. Remember that the top talented players will be gone before LA picks at #52 in round two. Let’s hope that the Rams take the best player available, regardless of the current roster make up.

How the LA Rams might change their draft strategy
First, if there is a talented quarterback available in round two, grab him. If Jordan Love or Jalen Hurts falls to the Rams, pick him. Injuries are just one play away from occurring, just ask Jacksonville’s Nick Foles.
Second, the Rams could decide to trade into the first round by using a late draft pick and Todd Gurley. They could possibly deal their way into having four selections in the first three rounds. Talk about building for the future!
Third, the Rams could decide to stock up on linemen, early and often. Whether it’s on an offensive or defensive lineman, they should take the best available. If it’s a defensive tackle, let Aaron Donald mentor the young player.
Finally, perhaps the best strategy, select the best overall player there regardless of the position. Let them battle for the starting job in training camp. This puts the best players on the field and gives LA the better chance at winning the Super Bowl. Why pass on Deacon Jones just because you signed Rosie Grier in free agency?
