As expected, the LA Rams aces appear to be placing both Todd Gurley and Brandin Cooks on the trade block. A soft market for both has been the holdup
The LA Rams may have miscalculated the 2020 NFL Free Agency market. Well, more accurately, the projected NFL interest in either running back Todd Gurley or wide receiver Brandin Cooks. We knew that both players are benefitting from a significantly player-friendly NFL contract paying both among the NFL elites.
We also know that both players had disappointing 2019 NFL seasons, just after signing hefty NFL contracts. At the end of the 2019 NFL season, we heard the whispers of running back Todd Gurley’s future as an LA Rams running back called into question. We also know that Cooks is underperforming his current contract with the LA Rams, and would be a likely player on the trade block in the 2020 offseason. So far, both of the rumors appear to be true, to a point.
As the NFL opened the “legal tampering” window for prospective free agents, the rumors over Todd Gurley intensified. The latest reports cite the Rams asking price for Gurley, a running back who contributed 14 touchdowns to the Rams offense in a down season in 2019, as low as a single fourth-round pick. But so far, no NFL teams seem to be picking up the phone and giving the Rams an offer.
So far, the LA Rams have done next to nothing to free up available salary-cap space. Although through it all, there was hope, or a gut feeling, that the Rams had deals cooking on the back burner.
While it is still early in the process, and despite the fact that both Brandin Cooks and Todd Gurley are on the trading block, nothing has generated news or reports of progress yet. That could be the case for several days as the Rams sort through ways to free up available salary-cap space.
But the true action for the LA Rams lies ahead with the upcoming NFL Draft. Stay tuned.
