The LA Rams are dealing with salary-cap space reality. Which big contract player will be moved next?
The LA Rams have some decisions to make right now, all due to the need to fit new contracts within their salary cap. The salary cap is intended to make the NFL more competitive between the big and small markets. Some teams are more conservative with big contracts while other teams thrive on narrow salary cap space. The LA Rams are looking salary cap space reality right in the face.
Currently, LA ranks near the bottom among the NFL in available cap space. Cleveland has $47
million and LA has $5.4 million, according to spotrac.com. Incidentally, the defending Super Bowl champions are last and will have to make space available in order to pay their upcoming draft class. However, the calculations to arrive ar that $5.4 million do not seem to reflect new contracts with center Austin Blythe, outside linebacker Leonard Floyd, or defensive tackle Michael Brockers.
There is no denying that the LA Rams pay the star players big money. Todd Gurley was both the beneficiary and victim of a big contract. There are other players with extraordinary paydays that LA may decide to move on from.
Would you be shocked to know that 57 percent of the Rams 2020 salary cap is tied up in seven players’ contracts? Most importantly, QB Jared Goff and DT Aaron Donald account more nearly 30 percent of the team’s cap space. Shocked to know that Goff, Donald, Brandon Cooks, and Jalen Ramsey’s salaries add up to 44.9 percent of the Rams cap space? That certainly makes it hard to pay for better talent on the offensive line, doesn’t it?
There are tough decisions to be made. Contracts are earned on the field but one-hit wonders get paid, sometimes. Wil the LA Rams move away from this player in 2020?
