What if LA Rams QB Jared Goff gets traded because he does not fit into the new offense? Chapter 3
Everyone remembers that this is not the same LA Rams which ended in 2019. As a matter of fact, there was a major change in the coaching staff after the 2019 season. Kevin O’Connell was hired as the new offensive coordinator for the LA Rams in January 2020. Expect him to revamp the offensive scheme to his liking.
O’Connell played quarterback at San Diego State University. From 2004 through 2007, he completed 664 passes for 7689 yards with 46 touchdowns. New England drafted him in the fourth round of the 2008 NFL Draft.
Kevin O’Connell began his NFL coaching career in 2015 in Cleveland. By 2019, he was named as the offensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins, . He oversaw the development of rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who was drafted in round 1 last year.
What if the LA Rams traded Jared Goff for Dwayne Haskins
You may recall that Haskins had played at Ohio State University under head coach Urban Meyer. In college, he completed approximately 70 percent of his passes for 5,396 yards with 54 touchdowns. With such a successful collegiate career, he left college early for the NFL draft.
At age 22, he became the Washington Redskins’ starting quarterback in week 11, mainly by the insistence of ownership. Of course, he took advantage of his opportunity by throwing for 1081 yards with seven touchdowns. Haskins threw for 284 yards prior to being named as the starter. But much of that production was due to the one-on-one tutelage and customizing the playbook by his offensive coordinator, Kevin O’Connell.
Haskins did not have the quality level of receivers that the LA Rams possess. The Rams receiving corps actually plays into his skill set. Haskins could be a less expensive option, as well. And if there was one NFL team which struggled at the offensive line in 2019, it would be the Redskins.
Mobile young and strongly linked to Rams OC
Haskins is in the second year of his rookie contract. In 2020, his salary cap hit will be $3.27 million. Goff’s salary cap hit will be $36 million. What could the Rams have done in free agency with an extra $32 million to invest?
Here is the possible trade that sends Goff to Washington. The Rams will send Goff and their compensatory third-round pick for Redskins’ Haskins and the Redskins first-round pick in 2020 at number two as well as the Redksins second-round pick in 2021. Basically, Goff replaces Alex Smith and Drew Allen as the Redskins starting quarterback.
O’Connell gets his mobile young quarterback and the LA Rams get into round one of the 2020 NFL Draft. Sounds crazy enough to come to fruition, soon. Let’s see how things play out as the draft gets closer.
