Pitfall 2 – Using two of their first four picks on the offensive line

The LA Rams have added four offensive linemen in the past 12 months. If the people choosing offensive linemen could not add quality talent in four attempts, adding an overabundance of offensive linemen in 2020 just clogs up the works.  The Rams have two 2019 NFL Draft players in Bobby Evans and David Edwards and added Austin Corbett and Coleman Shelton as well. They joined the ranks of the team’s offensive line in 2019.

The LA Rams offensive line got off on the wrong foot in 2019, yes. But the true calamity began as the team began swapping parts virtually every week to compensate for a new injury to a starting offensive lineman. The Rams’ depth at the line became so bad that the team added players who started the season on other teams.

Offensive lines in the NFL need familiarity, consistency, coaching, talent, and a bit of luck.  What happened in 2019 was bad, yes. But even teammates who had not trained or practiced at all as a unit began to come together at the end of the season, simply because of their ability to practice and play together over a period greater than a couple of days.

The latest Rams contract signings restore both veterans, left tackle Andrew Whitworth, and center Austin Blythe, to the Rams’ starting roster. Many feel the team must draft their replacements in the 2020 NFL Draft. And if the right talent level falls, or a raw but high upside player is there on day three, then, of course, the Rams should pull the trigger and call out their name at the podium. But this Rams team has lost four starting linebackers, a workhorse running back, and two starting defensive backs. Fill those first.
