LA Rams select Scottie Phillips, RB Mississippi

Scottie Phillips is the last player taken by LA in the 2020 draft. Phillips played running back at Ole Miss. He will be an immediate contributor on special teams.

In college, Phillips had 1652 total yards from scrimmage with 20 touchdowns. He played two seasons at Mississippi, 2018 and 2019. Phillips stands 5-feet-8 weighing 211 pounds.

He ran a 4.56-second 40-yard dash at the Combine. He bench-pressed 225 pounds 29 times. Phillips is big enough and strong enough to return kicks for LA. The Rams could use an explosive return man that is able to break tackles.

Before playing at Ole Miss, Phillips was a highly sought after junior college star running back.  He impressed coaches upon his arrival at the Mississippi campus. Michael Wayne Bratton of saturdaydownsouth.com wrote the following:

Coming off two consecutive 1,000-yard seasons at the JUCO level, Phillips flashed his potential in the spring and … According to his head coach, Phillips was the running back that stood out during the team’s most recent scrimmage.

"“Scottie hit a big one on Saturday in the scrimmage,” Matt Luke said during his latest media availability. “There’s a really good competition going on right there, … Really like the competition and the physicality they are running with.”"

Time will tell if Phillips becomes the next great running back. Meanwhile, it would be cool to watch him excellent in returning kicks. Let’s see how things play out.
