Should the LA Rams trade up for this generational talent in order to win a championship?

The evaluation of talent determines winning organizations from average ones. Talent evaluation has been the downfall of many NFL coaches and general managers. If the LA Rams could make a trade to grab this player, shouldn’t they do so?

The most important part thing about the offseason is making the LA Rams a Super Bowl contender. While that is the goal, it seems as though general manager Les Snead is still trying to figure out how the salary cap works? Most Rams fans think that the LA Rams messed up by releasing Todd Gurley.

Snead did well by drafting the running back Gurley who had good potential but had gambled and lost on a  full recovery from his knee injury at Georgia. Apparently, his knee limited Gurley’s upside, while the player had a huge and airtight contract. Facing those circumstances, the dice were cast. After all, since when does a part-time running back get a huge money deal?

This NFL draft has many talented players which are slated to go early in the first round. While defensive tackle Aaron Donald looks like a generational talented player, too, he will need more help on defense.

Would the LA Rams trade Jalen Ramsey in order to draft Chase Young

The Jacksonville Jaguars got two first-round draft picks for Jalen Ramsey from the Rams. Don’t forget, the LA Rams got Dante Fowler from Jacksonville, too. There’s a chance that Ramsey signs elsewhere next March and the Rams end up with nothing in return.

DE Chase Young is one of those players that LA needs to draft. Young is projected to be the next best edge pass rusher. He would be in a Rams uniform for the next five seasons under a rookie contract.

Lance Zierlein of nfl.com grades Young at 7.37. He sees Young as a perennial All-Pro caliber player. Zierlein writes the following:

"Elite size, length and athleticism created loads of production and a vaulted pro projection, … possesses superior traits and the ability to wreck and alter offensive game-plans as a perennial All-Pro."

Some LA Rams fans think cornerback Jalen Ramsey is the real deal. But after watching him from his rookie season until his departure via injury in 2019, there is no doubt that LA will need to trade him here and now, and avoid overpaying another NFL player based on his historic production. Young is the better talent in both the short and long run.

The track is laid. If the LA Rams continue on “as planned”, they will be painted into another corner of paying whatever a player demands in the 2021 NFL Free Agency market.  Young will likely not get past the Washington Redskins, who sit at number two in the 2020 NFL Draft. But to get there, the LA Rams will need to package a significant package for the Redskins:

The Washington Redskins will need offensive line help, as OT Trent Williams will likely sit out another season. And Jalen Ramsey fills the Redskins need at cornerback in this draft.  Even this package may not be enough, but it is enough to get the dialogue started.  Perhaps if the Redskins soften, OT Trent William can be added instead of the 4th round pick to balance out salary cap hits.

Adding DE Chase Young will set the LA Rams up for years to come on the defensive line. And if the Rams finally keep their draft picks, the team will be able to build around him in the future.
