3 reasons why LA Rams ripe for FB in or after 2020 NFL Draft

Reason 2: Super Bowl LIV proved the value of fullback
The LA Rams were able to sit back and observe the 2019 playoffs and Super Bowl LIV and take notes on what worked and what did not. And the team’s scouting efforts were amplified by head coach Sean McVay’s adding commentary to the Super Bowl LIV pre-game show. Now those observations appear to be going into action, as the team has parted ways with both running back Todd Gurley and wide receiver Brandin Cooks. While the teams will certainly add playing time to WR Josh Reynolds, the team will need to shift the playbook from finesse and deep routes to power running, just like the Super Bowl was played.
That game was a thriller, and while it highlighted the passing arm of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, it also spotlighted the devastating impact the fullback position can have against the modern need-for-speed NFL defenses. In 2019 NFL playoffs, teams that could run the ball effectively enjoyed the most success. While the Kansas City Chiefs sprang a come-from-behind win upon the San Francisco 49ers, even they had success at the running game.
But more impressive was the use of the fullback in the passing game. The 49ers used fullback Kyle Juszczyk to devastating effect as a receiver. While the Kansas City Chiefs did not use fullback Anthony Sherman in the same way, he did a marvelous job opening up the running lanes and keeping his quarterback upright.
The display was not lost on head coach McVay, who admitted to being open to adding a fullback this offseason. And if the Rams head coach, who is also their chief offensive planner, says the team can use a fullback, you can bet the team will add one.
