LA Rams: 2020 NFL Draft – post Cooks trade Mock Draft 7.1
By Larry Brake
LA Rams select Troy Dye, LB Oregon
The Rams pad the linebacking corps with this selection. Troy Dye is taken in round 3 as the 104th overall pick. Dye played collegiately at Oregon University.
Dye stands 6-feet-4 weighing 226 pounds. In college, Dye made 391 total tackles. He collected 13 sacks and intercepted five passes. He fits the model to combat the modern NFL pass offense.
There is an excellent report by thedraftnetwork.com of Dye’s ability to play:
"He demonstrates very good reactive athleticism for the position. He is a run and hit, down hill linebacker that quickly diagnoses run/pass. … Has good athleticism and awareness to drop in space and does a very good job of getting underneath inside receivers and carrying a TE up a seam. … He can play in sub packages due to his coverage ability and projects as an excellent 4 phase, core special teamer in the NFL."
The release of Clay Matthews opens the door for Dye. He is a younger, faster version of Matthews. Most of all, he will be playing under his rookie contract for the next four years.
Once again, mobility and versatility are very key in drafting Dye. LA will continue to find players who can contribute in more than one spot.
