The LA Rams have restructured their roster to align with the strengths of the 2020 NFL Draft – wide receiver, running back, and defensive back
At the end of the 2019 season, the LA Rams‘ hopes lay upon the good fortunes of free agency, and the ability to restructure crippling player contracts to enable the team to sign talented veterans. Just three months later, the Rams oft-besieged front office has realigned the team’s roster to the deep talent pool of the 2020 NFL Draft.
With the release of running back Todd Gurley, the trade of wide receiver Brandin Cooks, the retirement of safety Eric Weddle, and waiving the contract option of Nickell Roby-Coleman, the LA Rams virtually overnight placed the roster in need of the positions that are plentiful in the 2020 NFL Draft – running back, wide receiver, and defensive back. So well is the roster set up now that the Rams have the potential to walk away with five to six starters from the 2020 NFL Draft.
The difference seems to be the ability of the LA Rams to select a “best player available” prospect more frequently, simply due to the fact that the Rams have competing needs that can take advantage of the best player on the board at their selection. That feature opens up the draft board with other players who fall to the Rams at their other selections. With five picks in the first 126 selections, general manager Les Snead can load up on starting-caliber talent rather quickly.
That is, of course, as long as the team commits to patience and letting the draft board come to them. The difference in the new mock drafts are impressive, as we’ll soon discover in the latest version of Mock Draft 6.0
