LA Rams: 4 Picks address glaring position needs in 2020 NFL Draft
By Larry Brake
LA Rams pick John Simpson, G Clemson
The Rams have not drafted a true guard since 2015. John Simpson is selected in round 2 as the 52nd overall pick. He played collegiately at Clemson University.
Simpson stands 6-feet-4 weighing 321 pounds. The ideal size of offensive guards, according to Bill Walsh, is 6-feet-3 weighing 300 pounds. Simpson checks that box.
He performed well at the NFL Combine. He ran the 40-yard dash in 5.24 seconds. Simpson bench pressed 225 pounds 34 times.
Lance Zierlein of nfl.com believes Simpson is the aggressive player that LA needs. Zierlein writes the following:
"Broad, well-built snowplow of a guard with the traits and power to turn a crease into a full-fledged running lane. Teams looking to add physicality up front will covet Simpson, but keep in mind he was plenty effective with scoop blocks, pulls, second-level climbs and even screen blocking, which shows the big man can move. … he plays with good technique and has the tools to become an early starter and a good NFL guard."
The selection of Simpson is the first step to improve the running game. He played in high profile games at Clemson against very good competition. Simpson played in three national championship games.
Here is the second player who would bolster the Rams roster at his position.
