LA Rams: 4 Picks address glaring position needs in 2020 NFL Draft
By Larry Brake
LA Rams pick Antonio Gandy-Golden, WR Liberty
LA uses its last pick to select a big wide receiver. Antonio Gandy-Golden gets drafted as the 234th overall pick of the draft. He played collegiately at Liberty University.
Gandy-Golden stands 6-feet-4 weighing 220 pounds. He is bigger than your prototypical size of 6-feet-3 weighing 210 pounds of a wide receiver. He would give opposing defensive coordinators nightmares in trying to cover him.
At Liberty, in 2018 and 2019, he caught 150 passes for 2433 yards with 20 touchdowns. Most of all, he averaged 16.2 yards per reception. His big-play potential makes him a viable replacement for Brandin Cooks.
Perhaps he could play the Rob Gronkowski type of tight end in the Rams aerial assault. Can you imagine a slot corner trying to cover him? Expect LA to move him around in different formations.
Zierlein of nfl.com gives his opinion of Gandy-Golden’s skill set. He writes the following:
"Very intriguing height-weight-speed prospect who showed noticeable improvements in a number of important areas in 2019. … he has an innate ability to add yardage after the catch with his size and agility. Gandy-Golden’s route-running is still a work in progress, but his build-up speed, length and ball skills could allow him to develop into a dangerous third-level threat on the next level."
Gandy-Golden makes the Rams receiving corps better. He could play special teams until he grasps the speed of the NFL. While some mocks have him off the board in round four, he was there in the seventh round on this online simulator.
There is a chance he is the steal of the draft. Let’s see how it plays out.
