Malcolm Perry should be a target for the LA Rams either in round 7 of the 2020 NFL Draft or immediately after the NFL Draft is over

The LA Rams need to leave no stone unturned in order to get the best football players for the 2020 season. Many times the service academy players are overlooked. Quarterback Malcolm Perry might be a diamond in the rough.

Perry played quarterback for the Navy Midshipmen. He stands 5-feet-9 weighing 190 pounds. The dual-threat Navy quarterback plays in an offense that runs the ball more times than they actually throw it. Here are his stats from last season.

Perry completed 48 of 86 passes for 1084 yards with seven touchdowns. He ran the ball 295 times for 2017 yards with 21 touchdowns. Navy runs the triple-option flexbone offense which is very similar to the double-wing offense of days long ago.

Perry was invited to the NFL Combine. He ran a 4.63-second 40-yard dash. He bench-pressed 225 pounds 10 times. Perry vertically leaped 3 feet and broad jumped over 10 feet. He had a better Combine performance than Michigan QB Shea Patterson.

Perry will be making the positional move from quarterback to wide receiver. Most importantly, Perry will be slated to become an inside slot receiver. Think of him as being a Julian Edelman or Wes Welker type of receiver.

Perry was recruited as a slotback, originally. Ava Wallace of washingtonpost.com reports the following:

"Perry was recruited to Navy as a slotback, and it was only midway through his first year at the Naval Academy Preparatory School that Jasper decided he might stick Perry in the quarterback room as well. Just in case."

Ways the LA Rams could use Malcolm Perry

First, Perry could run back kicks. He could be deadly as a punt returner. Also, in 2017 and 2018, Perry returned kickoffs in which he averaged 24.6 yards per return.

Second, Perry might be an elusive slot receiver, especially in a trips formation. Imagine him running a receiver screen with Robert Woods and Tyler Higbee blocking for him. Maybe, he is that underneath third and short possession receiver that moves the chains with each reception.

Third, Perry could be the emergency back up quarterback. The Rams could stick with Jared Goff and John Wolford and not sign another quarterback. Perry could play the role of scout-team quarterback, as well.
